What is a domain name?

A domain name or website name is a specific web site address that you choose and register with a company called a domain registrar (an example company is You can think of it like a phone number - its unique to you the purchaser (or your website designer who purchases it on your behalf)! Domain names are purchased for an annual price and depending on the TLD/extension can range in price from $10 - $25 per year.

What is FTP?

FTP stands for "File Transfer Protocol" and is a standard followed by web hosting companies to allow you or your web developer to connect to their server and transfer files (web pages, images, video files etc) to and from the web hosting server. There are many FTP client software out there (e.g. FileZilla Client Software) and generally they have a user interface similar to Windows Explorer making it easy to move file from your computer and drag drop/upload onto the server computer.

What is a URL?

URL stands for "Universal Resource Locator". This is the address/website address you type into the address bar in your browser to view a specific web page via the Internet. For example, you may type in to access our home page.

Do I need a database on my website?

The answer is: it depends! Generally a database is needed for web sections/pages such as a catalogue of products, calendar of events, a portfolio of items, job/career listings and many many more scenarios.... usually when a page is required to be changed dynamically or is based on things such as the date or based on a search result - will using a database be a good idea. Other technologies such as XML can also be used to represent a set of data that is to be displayed dynamically.
